I went for the bath mat instead....

So, I went to the thrift store Wednesday, looking for an old fuzzy towel to use as a roof for Marshmallow Manor....and there wasn't a single towel in sight, lol. But there was this fuzzy yellow bath mat! Figured I'd give it a try... First I cut it into 1 inch strips......

Then, I made a practice board. This way, I could figure out if I was going to like it or not....and to see how I should paint it. The top one is a strip glued down, then I used Mod Podge mixed with Brown paint....and painted it flat down, then I went back and glued another strip, and did the same process as above again.....

The bottom sample is the one I went with. It has 4 strips glued on....one on top of the other........and then painted all together. I LOVE the second one...Just looked more like Thatching, And it's fluffy, hehe!!

And here is the beginning, well almost the end.. I got a little carried away and forgot to take pictures along the way.

....the inspector even stopped by, And gave me the go ahead to keep working! LOL

And here She is in all her glory, Hahaa!! All I can say, is that I couldn't stop petting my house at this point, Bah hahaha....she was so fuzzy, I couldn't help myself!!

It still looks a little rough around the edges...but just wait.....

It's going to start to make sense here in a minute.....

See........it's starting to look a little more like a thatched roof now.....

And she even darkened up a little when she dried....This is just the under coat! I still have to go back and finish this coat around the sides....And then I get to start brushing on lighter colors to bring it to life. Keep your fingers crossed for me........

Any suggestions on which colors to use to lighten it all up would be greatly appreciated....I do have some gold to use as the last layer......Thinking it's going to need a little green in there, too......

OK...Hope everyone has a safe weekend, And enjoy your 4th! We (I'll) will be cooking out and watching the neighbors make idiots out of themselves...Hehehe....There's never a dull moment in the Trailer Park, LMAO!!!

Wow Katie I love it!! The thatch loos fab, isnt it fun thatching, I got quite qddicted!! You worked so quickly too, great to see all the steps in one go. I think once you have greenery or moss or flowers etc on it you wont need any other colour paint. Well done you!! Kate xxxx

Smart idea, would've never thought of that. YOu can use paper clay you carve too; but this seems easier - you can vaccuum it when it gets dusty. haa!

Hey happy 4th to you guys too!

Katie, How nice of you to make Otis a house shaped scratching post! I am sure that he will love it. It looks like he is about to use it in the photo. Good luck with that! LOL

It does look good so far!

I am amazed at the things you come up with. Who would ever have thought of that bath mat for a thatched roof!!! It is going to be perfect once you lighten it down a little. Even Otis gives it his seal of approval. Course I can now see what Casey means when she says that he probably thinks it is his new scratching post. LOL

I love it! How clever to use a bath mat. So cute! And, I passed a reading award on to you but you have to look a post back to retrieve it. I was too busy telling about our area serial killer in today's post! Our little ole area with a serial killer and we've made the national news. Scary.
